Almost no gas
Six percent of Leicester homes heat with gas. Fifty-nine percent heat with oil and 17 percent with electricity. For most houses here a gas water heater is not an option, and a replacement means another electric tank, a tank heated by the boiler, or a heat pump model.
More than one water district
Leicester is served by water districts, not a town department. The Leicester Water Supply District draws from a well field in Paxton and two wells in Leicester, and buys treated water from Worcester. The Cherry Valley and Rochdale Water District serves another part of town.
The Leicester district's office is at 124 Pine Street, 508-892-8484. Ask your district for the hardness. On a private well, have the water tested. What hard water and well water do to a tank.
The housing
About 88 percent of Leicester homes are single-family. The median home was built in 1965.
Rebates
National Grid supplies the electricity, so Mass Save's 2026 rebate of $750 on a heat pump water heater applies. It covers replacing an electric, oil, propane or gas water heater. Whether one fits your house.
Where there is gas service, it is Eversource or National Grid. For a gas smell, leave and call 911.
